  • 24th June, 2006: I Bring You, The Tempests!

Spat by Soulgirl at 2:43 pm | Comment here! Comments (29)

I have always loved this boy band… from the moment I heard Ain’t No Big Thing, I fell in love with the lead singer – doesn’t his voice just melt in your ears! I’m consulting my soul oracle for further anorak info about this group for you, however, here I give my fave song to you!

    Quote:

The sleeve note on the Album says: “Would You Believe?” was the question the Tempests asked on their first single. The answer has turned out to be a resounding “yes,” as proven by this first LP of theirs. Everyone believed in “Would You Believe” so much that the Tempests were asked to record 10 more exciting tunes to put in this album. But “big” things, like putting out albums, are commonplace for the Tempests. There are 10-countem-10 members in this extra-large aggregation of top musicians. They all come from the Charlotte, N.C., area, where performing has become a way of life for them. And to the Tempests, “performing” means “soul,” which is really their bag.

The original Tempests were organised seven years ago by John Branch, who made up one half of the then guitarist-pianist duo. A couple years later drums, a bass and a lead singer were added. Horns were the next addition and before anyone knew it the group numbered 10 men.

So, in alphabetical order, here are the Tempests: John Branch, Michael Branch, Tom Brawley, Jim Butt, Van coble, Nelson Lemmond, Hazel Martin, Gerald Schrum, Ronnie Smith and Rich White.

There’s no sense asking “Would you believe?” until you listen to this LP.

There won’t be any question after you’ve done that. Ron Oberman.

The Tempests – Ain’t No Big Thing…. hit the play button and enjoy!

Yes, I agree. Isn’t it a shame that they’re no longer playing.

Not to cause any confusion, but “John” Branch is his correct name, but my father went by Roger (middle name) in those days. Actually, he still goes by Roger. Just to give an update, a greatest hits album is coming!!! Growing up with the many different versions of the Tempests was an absolute joy. My father and every last band mate to be in the group, were some of the most talented musicians I have every met. Don’t know if anyone knows, but they have since been inducted in the NC Beach Music hall of fame. Also, to note, my uncle Michael Branch has since past. My uncle which signed the Chairmen of The Board. Also, founded “Beach Blast”, one of the biggest beach music concert series in Myrtle Beach, SC. No question that he was one of the best piano/organ players I’ve heard. My dad moved to New Orleans almost 20 years ago to work for the legendary Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn at Sea-Saint Recording Studio. My father & uncle, along with Allen and Marshall have been the biggest inspirations to me as a producer, musician, really just a general fan of music period… Thanks a lot for this article.

It’s a very sad reality Caleb. Many of the ‘soul stars’ I dance to most weekends are either very old or passed away. However, they have left a very rich legacy in their music and long may it reign.

Thanks for stopping by… The Tempests really were something very special indeed.
